  5.     Q: The  Paper Saver  does not  wrap words  around to the next
  6.        printed line.  Why not?
  7.  
  8.     A: The program will  reformat your text files ONLY IF you let
  9.        it.  Should  you select a file from the  directory listing
  10.        and The Paper Saver detects that it contains lines of text
  11.        that are much longer  than will fit on  a single page, the
  12.        program will prompt you  if you wish to reformat the file.
  13.        If you answer  "Yes" to this prompt,  the program will try
  14.        to reformat the  contents of your file.  Don't worry...the
  15.        original file is preserved.  The  reformatted file will be
  16.        AUTOMATICALLY used when you start the actual print job.

  19.     Q: I am  using a Hewlett-Packard  DeskJet 540 printer,  and I
  20.        am trying to  print using the  condensed font in  portrait
  21.        mode.  However,  at various places  on the printed  output
  22.        letters of text are chopped off and at other places  lines
  23.        of text  are missing.   The chopped  off text  looks as if
  24.        the bottoms of the  characters are missing.   This chopped
  25.        off text only occurs at the  end of a printed line.   This
  26.        problem only occurs when using condensed font in  portrait
  27.        mode.   The  full  height  font,  and landscape modes work
  28.        great.  What is causing this?

  30.     A: When we  first heard about  this problem, we  thought that
  31.        the  user  had  a  bad  printer  cable.  Only after we had
  32.        another user report the same  problem did we decide to  do
  33.        some  investigation.    It  turns  out   that  all   these
  34.        complaints  were  coming  from  owners  of H/P DeskJet 540
  35.        printers.   After   notifying  Hewlett-Packard's   printer
  36.        division,  H/P  admitted  that  there  is  a  bug with the
  37.        DeskJet 540's  firmware when  using half-height  condensed
  38.        Courier   font   in   portrait   mode.    They   have   no
  39.        "work-around",  and  since  the  DJ540  is  no  longer  in
  40.        production, they  have no  intent to  correct the problem.
  41.        In short,  DJ540 owners  must live  with this  glitch.  It
  42.        appears that  H/P rewrote  the firmware  for their  inkjet
  43.        printers  starting  with  the  DJ540.   This  is  why  all
  44.        previous models do not manifest this problem.  H/P  stated
  45.        that their newer  model 600 series  printers has this  bug
  46.        corrected.

  48.        Therefore, the only suggestion I have is to use  condensed
  49.        text only in landscape mode IF you own a DeskJet 540.

  52.     Q: When I  print a file  with my Hewlett-Packard  DeskJet the
  53.        printed  pages  come  out  in  reverse  order,  and I must
  54.        therefore abort the print job.  What is wrong?
  55.  
  56.     A: There is  nothing wrong.   The DeskJet series  of printers
  57.        will  often  begin  printing  with  the  last  page of the
  58.        document because The Paper Saver collates your print  job.
  59.        If you wait until the  complete print job is complete  you
  60.        will be pleasantly surprised to  find the page on the  top
  61.        of  the  printed  stack  will   be  page  number  1!    No
  62.        re-shuffling of the stack is  required.  In order to  have
  63.        the last  page print  as page  1, the  first page  printed
  64.        must  be  the  last  page.   Don't panic early...The Paper
  65.        Saver knows what it is doing.

  68.     Q: In  the  dual  column  and  quad  page modes, some of the
  69.        letters  at  the  end  of  each  line are printed missing.
  70.        What is causing this?
  71.  
  72.     A: There is  only so much  room horizontally on  each page to
  73.        print text.  If the  file you are attempting to  print has
  74.        more  than  78  horizontal  characters  per line, then you
  75.        will lose some characters  beyond column 78 in  your file.
  76.        One  way  to  compensate  for  this  is  to strip the left
  77.        margin   of   unnecessary   blank   spaces.     From   the
  78.        "Configurations"  menu  you  can  strip leading spaces, or
  79.        shrink the  left margin  to give  you more  breathing room
  80.        along the right margin.

  82.        If  you  have  no  left  margin  to  shrink, and you can't
  83.        afford  to  lose  any  characters  along the right margin,
  84.        consider switching  to landscape  mode, or  consider doing
  85.        away with dual column or quad page format.  You can use  a
  86.        full page condensed print mode instead.

  89.     Q: The Paper Saver locks up when I try to print Word  Perfect
  90.        document files.  What is wrong?
  91.  
  92.     A: The  Paper Saver  works only  with pure  ASCII text files.
  93.        Files  saved  by  Word  Perfect,  Ami Pro, Microsoft Word,
  94.        etc., are  normally saved  in binary  format, and  are not
  95.        ASCII files.   When you consider  the literally dozens  of
  96.        proprietary file formats that  exist, it would be  a major
  97.        task for  The Paper  Saver to  be able  to convert or read
  98.        all of  them.   The Paper  Saver only  works with  simple,
  99.        plain ASCII text files.  Neither does it print graphics.

  101.        If you  do have  a Word  Perfect file  that you would like
  102.        The Paper Saver  to print, you  must first save  or export
  103.        your  Word  Perfect,  Ami  Pro,  etc. document as an ASCII
  104.        text file.

  107.     Q: When I  print using any  double-sided format, I  receive a
  108.        prompt window instructing me to remove the printed  sheets
  109.        and to reinsert  the stack back  into the printer's  paper
  110.        tray...while  the  printer  is  still  printing!    What's
  111.        wrong?
  112.  
  113.     A: Nothing is  wrong.  The  Paper Saver simply  does not know
  114.        how fast  your printer  is printing.   Each printer  has a
  115.        buffer where data received  from your computer is  stored.
  116.        Each  printer's  buffer  memory  size  is  different.  The
  117.        larger the buffer, the  sooner you will receive  a message
  118.        prompt instructing  you to  reinsert your  paper stack for
  119.        the  second  pass  of  printing  (double-sided mode only).
  120.        You will  have to  keep your  eye on  your printer's panel
  121.        "BUSY"  light  to  know  when  it  is time to reinsert the
  122.        paper into your printer.  Once the "BUSY" light goes  off,
  123.        your printer  has finished  printing the  first side pass,
  124.        and is ready  to start printing  on the reverse  side.  At
  125.        this point,  it is  safe to  remove the  printed stack and
  126.        reinsert it into your printer.

  129.     Q: I own a laser printer and frequently The Paper Saver  will
  130.        eject an extra blank sheet  at the beginning of the  print
  131.        job.  What is wrong?
  132.  
  133.     A: More than likely your laser printer still had data in  its
  134.        memory leftover from a  previous program.  Laser  printers
  135.        retain data in  its memory until  it receives a  form feed
  136.        or reset command.   An earlier program  may have set  your
  137.        laser printer in  landscape mode and  failed to reset  the
  138.        printer  upon  exiting.   The  Paper  Saver  may find your
  139.        laser  in  the  wrong  mode  for  your  present  print job
  140.        request, and attempt to reset the printer for you.   Often
  141.        this  results  in  a  blank  page  being ejected from your
  142.        printer.  If this  is something that occurs  frequently, I
  143.        would suggest that  before using The  Paper Saver on  your
  144.        laser printer  that you  either turn  off the  printer and
  145.        turn it back  on again or  press the RESET  button on your
  146.        printer to clear its memory.

  149.     Q: I am attempting to print a text file, but The Paper  Saver
  150.        informs me that  the file is  not an ASCII  text file, and
  151.        refuses to print the file.
  152.  
  153.         A: The Paper  Saver expects a  file to have  no ASCII control
  154.        characters from decimal 0-31.   The only exception is  the
  155.        carriage  return/line  feed  combo  (decimal 13/10), which
  156.        should appear  at the  end of  each line  of text.   Often
  157.        text files downloaded from a BBS or via the Internet  will
  158.        have line feed characters at the end of each line, but  no
  159.        carriage return characters.  If carriage return characters
  160.        (decimal 13)  are missing  from the  file, then  The Paper
  161.        Saver will reject it, and  refuse to print it.   This does
  162.        not happen very often, but  if it does, the best  solution
  163.        is  to  load  the  file  in  your  word  processor,   then
  164.        export/save the  file as  a text  file, then  trying using
  165.        The Paper Saver again to print the file.

  168.     Q: There  are strange  characters appearing  at the beginning
  169.        and end of  the printed output.   What is wrong?   By  the
  170.        way, this  problems only  occurs when  I save  files using
  171.        Windows Write.
  172.  
  173.     A: Windows Write can  save  files in  various formats.    The
  174.        most common and default format is the *.WRI format,  which
  175.        includes binary control codes at the head and tail of  the
  176.        file (and sometimes within the  body of the file).   These
  177.        control  codes  are  how  Write  knows  what  size font to
  178.        display, whether to make words bold, margins, etc.   These
  179.        control codes only  mean something to  Windows Write.   If
  180.        you  save  your  files  in  the  *.WRI  format,  you  will
  181.        certainly receive strange  characters in your  output when
  182.        using The Paper  Saver.  This  is because *.WRI  files are
  183.        not  pure  ASCII  .TXT  files.  If  you want to solve this
  184.        problem, save your  Write files as  *.TXT Text Files  (use
  185.        "File | Save As" from the Write Menu.

  187.        One other problem that often comes up when printing  files
  188.        that originated  from Windows  Write...   If the  file was
  189.        composed with word wrapping "ON", and the file then  saved
  190.        as  a  *.TXT  Text  File,  the resulting file will contain
  191.        extremely  LONG  lines  of  text.   For  example,  if  you
  192.        composed a  single paragraph  in Write  that contained  10
  193.        lines of  text, and  then save  the file  as a *.TXT file,
  194.        the resulting file actually  only contains ONE SUPER  LONG
  195.        LINE of  text.   WinWrite strips  all carriage return/line
  196.        feeds at the end of each line, resulting in one long  line
  197.        of of  text.   A file  of this  nature will  also give The
  198.        Paper Saver  trouble UNLESS  it is  reformatted and broken
  199.        down  into  smaller  length  multi-lines.   One way to see
  200.        what  we  are  referring  to  is  to reopen the *.TXT file
  201.        using Windows Notepad.  You will immediately see only  the
  202.        first part of each paragraph.

  204.        What is the  solution to these  long lines that  originate
  205.        from WinWrite  and similar programs?  The Paper Saver will
  206.        automatically  detect  lines that  are too  long and  will
  207.        prompt the user if you wish  to have the file  reformatted
  208.        prior to printing (see earlier answer above).

  211.     Q: The Paper Saver  prints this  one  file  correctly  when I
  212.        configure it to use  my HP DeskJet printer  with condensed
  213.        mode, but when I use  my laser printer (which emulates  an
  214.        HP  LaserJet),  the  printed  output  truncates the end of
  215.        each line.  Why?
  216.  
  217.     A: The DeskJet  series of  printers  have built into  them  a
  218.        20  characters  per  inch  fixed  font  which  is  used in
  219.        condensed  mode  output.   Most  laser  printers, however,
  220.        only  a  16.67  or  15  characters  per  inch  font as its
  221.        smallest fixed font.   As a result,  the DeskJet  printers
  222.        can print more characters  per line than a  laser printer.
  223.        This  difference  shows  up  as  truncated  lines (missing
  224.        characters)  when  you  print  using  a  laser  printer in
  225.        condensed,  dual   column  PORTRAIT   format.   The   best
  226.        solution to this problem  is to switch to  LANDSCAPE mode.
  227.        Usually  this  gives  the  printer  more  room in order to
  228.        print the wider characters when using a laser printer.

  231.     Q: In the "Configuration options" menu you ask why the "Draft
  232.        print: OFF"  remains locked  (i.e., the menu selection bar
  233.        jumps over this option).

  235.     A: The  reason can  be attributed  to the  fact that you have
  236.        selected a laser printer for your default printer.   99.9%
  237.        of all lasers ever produced do not have the capability  to
  238.        print  in  a  "draft"  mode.   The  "Draft  print" is only
  239.        accessible  when  you  have  selected  the  DeskJet inkjet
  240.        printer  as  your  default  printer.   The Hewlett-Packard
  241.        DeskJet printers  are the  only printers  supported by The
  242.        Paper Saver capable of printing in a "draft" mode.

  245.     Q: Sometimes when  I change page  layouts (e.g. landscape  to
  246.        portrait) and then print a  file in a condensed font,  the
  247.        resulting  output  has  the  lines  double spaced, and the
  248.        dividing column line running down the center of the  sheet
  249.        is  dashed,  instead  of  solid.   What  is  causing  this
  250.        problem?

  252.     A: Make sure that you  have not changed the "Lines  per inch"
  253.        configuration setting.  The dual spacing between lines  of
  254.        text occurs  when the  vertical "Lines  per inch"  setting
  255.        has been changed from its default value of 12 to 8.

  258.     Q: How do you adjust the  left margin, so that there is  room
  259.        to punch holes for a three-ring binder?
  260.  
  261.     A: You  can adjust  the left  margin at  which printing  will
  262.        begin  by  choosing  "Left  margin:"  selection  from  the
  263.        "Configuration  Options"  sub-menu.   The  value you enter
  264.        represents the number of  columns over from the  left edge
  265.        of  the  page  at  which  printing  will occur.  Please be
  266.        aware, however,  that using  a large  "left margin"  value
  267.        will cause the text on the right hand side of the page  to
  268.        possibly be truncated.

  271.     Q: Over here (outside of the United States) we use A4 paper,
  272.        and our date format is "day-month-year".  How do I change
  273.        the program to support these formats?
  274.  
  275.     A: From the "Configuration Options" sub-menu, you can  toggle
  276.        between  American  and  foreign   paper  sizes  and   date
  277.        formats.  Look for either | USA 8½" x 11" |  or | A4 210mm
  278.        x 297mm |.   If  the  selection  displays "USA...",   then
  279.        selecting this choice will change  it to "A4".    The date
  280.        format also will change automatically when you do this.
